Exercise at Mizell



Mizell Senior Center of Palm Springs is now offering 19 weekly exercise classes for seniors and active adults. The classes are varied and are designed to meet the needs of most any activity level. You can participate in Fit After Fifty, Yoga, Tai Chi, Zumba Gold, Arthritis Exercise, Beginning and Intermediate Tai Chi and Qigong, Seated for Wellness, and more.

According to a 2008 study from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) “Exercise is the only intervention that by itself reduces falls among older adults.” Why is this important? According to recent studies of Coachella Valley adults over age 55, over 20% are afraid of falling. For seniors over age 75, the fear of falling jumps to over 30%. According to CDC research, the fear of falling among older adults can lead to inactivity, decreased mobility, and actually increase fall risk. Fully 15% had actually fallen in the three months prior to the survey. Falls are the leading cause of injury deaths among older adults and the most common cause of non-fatal injuries and hospital admissions.  National studies of falls among older adults show that between 20% and 30% of people who fall suffer moderate to severe injuries such as bruises, hip fractures, or head trauma.  Injuries from falls are the leading cause of loss of independent living for seniors.
