Fitness

A Matter of Balance – Managing Concerns About Falls 

The award-winning, evidence-based, “A Matter of Balance Falls Prevention” course is offered at Mizell, as well as other wellness locations around the Coachella Valley. The course includes eight two-hour class sessions for a small group, led by two trained facilitators.  Sessions are twice a week for four weeks. This nationally recognized program was developed at the Roybal Center at Boston University, has been evaluated for its effectiveness and is featured as an effective program following CDC criteria. The A Matter of Balance Model has proven to be effective, showing significant improvements regarding participant levels of falls efficacy, falls management, falls control, exercise and social limitations with regard to concerns about falling.

Classes are taught by certified trainers, including Dr. Marc Eisman and Dr. Stephen Matthews, and Suzanne Spencer, all who have received national certification as Master Trainers for the course. This important Falls Prevention Program receives primary funding through a grant from the Desert Healthcare District with support from the Regional Access Project Foundation, Auen Foundation, and private donations. Improve My Balance

Do you find it difficult to stand for a long period of time?  Is your balance less than it used to be?  Do you tire easily by performing a simple task? Then join us for our 45-minute intensive balance and coordination class taught by Drs. Marc Eisman, D.C. and Stephen Matthews, D.C.  This class uses specialized equipment and methods based on evidence based programs that are globally recognized. Improve My Balance classes are a part of our comprehensive Fall Prevention programming and is recommended as a follow-up to A Matter of Balance. Be prepared to have fun, be challenged and improve your balance. A devastating fall could rob you of your retirement years and your independence. Learn how to remain active and independent. Fit After 50

Seniors are invited to come and exercise in this program which helps improve balance, flexibility, muscle tones, bone density, and posture. Seated Wellness with Lynn Simonson

Lynn Simonson is an internationally respected educator of jazz dance and a certified senior fitness instructor. In 2003, she developed her Seated Wellness Course which blends yoga, breath work, strength building and most importantly brain charging exercises.Look for the scheduled program on Thursdays each week by clicking here. Zumba Gold®

Chair Yoga – Get Fit Where You Sit!

Chair Yoga helps you improve your health and fitness doing yoga while sitting on a chair. Yoga relaxes your body and mind, builds up your musculoskeletal fitness and flexibility, and improves your balance. Elevate your health and well-being with these 1 hour sessions. Join our professional instructors as they bring adaptive fitness and exercise programs to those who could not benefit from traditional physical activities due to age or limiting physical/mental conditions or one’s environment/location. Beginning Tai Chi for Health: Yang Family Long Form 108 & Qigong Organ Exercises

This class will teach the Yang Family Long Form 108 along with Qigong organ exercises. You will begin with learning standing postures, breath control and breath control in movement. Instruction will also include Tai Chi walking and preparation for the organ exercises. There is no competition in this class; all movement will be modified to suit your current abilities and/or limitations.

This exercise will help to improve those with arthritic conditions that currently are causing less mobility and less activity. Other benefits are improved balance, improved circulation, the lowering of blood pressure, increased flexibility and enhanced breathing. This is also a great program for relaxing the mind in preparation for meditation as the form itself is a moving meditation. Taught by Neal Arida.

Intermediate & Advanced Tai Chi for Health

Take the challenge of learning and practicing these ancient Chinese arts of self-defense and health restoration by combining breath control with rhythmic, slow moving choreographed body movements. Learn to enhance vitality, improve overall health and reverse aging through Qigong (Chi Kung). Among its many health benefits are lowering of blood pressure, improved circulation, better balance, flexibility, enhanced breathing, clearing the mind, and lifting of the spirit. Taught by Neal Arida.
