Stars Among Us – 2014 – Where Were You in ’62?
Get ready to re-live those magic moments from your past as Mizell Senior Center presents our annual gala, Stars Among Us on Saturday, March 22, 2014 at the Palm Springs Air Museum beginning at 5:30 PM with cocktails and silent auction. You have never been to an event like Mizell Senior Center produces. No gowns, no tuxedo’s, no long speeches, just an experience like no other. In 2012, we brought you Surfin’ Safari as the Beach Boys and created The Musical Experience of the Season which drew a capacity audience. In 2013, we again sold out and received rave reviews for the transformation of the Air Museum into the Hollywood Bowl and the re-creation of the famed 1964 Beatles concert.
This year, The Musical Experience of the Season asks “Where were you in ’62?” as we re-live one of the most classic movies of our time: American Graffiti.
We will make sure that our attendees are transported back to another less complicated time. Remember hanging out at the local drive-in diner? Cruising in your car down the boulevard with your best friends? Dancing with your high school sweetheart at the sock hop? Get ready to Rock ‘n Roll to the live and classic sounds of Sha Na Na!! The key to the success of our Stars Among Us Gala is fun and attention to detail. This will be an experience like no other and as usual you can count on a few surprises!! Enjoy cocktails, our silent auction, a special dinner with a fun “diner flair”, enjoy an ice cream sundae and then get ready for a high energy show by the world acclaimed Sha Na Na. Be sure to bring your dancing shoes because this “sock hop” will be like no other as you dance away to the music that defines Rock ‘n Roll. Like last year, people will be talking about this “Musical Experience” for years to come!
Stay tuned as we announce our honorees and a few surprises in the coming weeks. Stars Among Us 2014 . . . The Experience is back!!

Stars Among Us ~ A Stunning Re-creation of the Hollywood Bowl and the Epic 1964 Beatles Concert
“The Musical Experience of the Season”
Mizell Senior Center of Palm Springs presented the “Musical Experience of the Season,” a stunning re-creation of The Hollywood Bowl and the epic 1964 Beatles Concert on March 23, 2013 at the Palm Springs Air Museum. The event featured Paperback Writer as “The Beatles Experience” and Bob Eubanks as Guest MC. Although well known as the host of the popular “The Newlywed Game,” Eubanks in 1964 produced the original Beatles concert at The Hollywood Bowl, even mortgaging his home to raise the funds. He, along with special guest Bob Hull (known as the 5th Beatle) provided exciting behind the scenes insights into the first Beatles concert to take place on the West coast of the United States as the group was taking “the colonies” by storm.
The guests entered “The Bowl” and were directed to their box seats ready and waiting with a picnic spread of delicious appetizers and salads. Dinner was served and the guests prepared for the concert. In addition to the Musical Experience of the Season, Mizell Senior Center honored several long-time supporters and community institutions that are truly Stars Among Us. They include Tracy Conrad, MD with the Gold Star Achievement Award, Jewish Federation of the Desert with the Galaxy Award, and the Palm Springs Rotary and Palm Springs SunUp Rotary Foundations with the Shining Star Award.
The highlight of the evening was the arrival of “The Beatles” on a Pan Am airliner recreating their historic arrival at JFK in New York in 1964. Complete with screaming fans and archival video of the actual arrival the audience jumped to their feet to welcome the band to the stage. The evening ended with the audience dancing the night away to their favorite Beatles hit impeccably performed by Paperback Writer.
Stars Among Us is the one social event of the Mizell Senior Center season and included both a silent and live auction, entertainment and dinner for only $175 per ticket. This event supported the new Coachella Valley-wide Meals On Wheels program as well as the other vital programs of Mizell Senior Center.
Stay tuned for next year!!
