Volunteers are the backbone of Mizell Center. Our volunteers are dedicated, compassionate, and very much appreciated. Volunteers provide support throughout Mizell, including at Aunt Betty’s thrift shop, our front desk, special events, and within our weekday lunch service of the Nutrition program.
Our volunteers reflect the diversity of our community, having varied backgrounds, experiences, identities, and skills. As such, our staff work closely with each volunteer to provide an experience that best utilizes their time, skills, and talents.

HOW TO VOLUNTEER
May 2026 Update: Thank you for your interest in volunteering at Mizell Center. We are grateful for the strong community support we receive. Our volunteer team is currently near full capacity, with the exception of roles in online sales (eBay), graphic design, photography, and data entry. We appreciate your willingness to share your time and talents and thank you for your continued interest in supporting Mizell.
Complete a volunteer application by printing and completing the PDF below, and either mailing, emailing, or bringing it in person to Mizell. If you need us to print a copy for you, just let us know. Following receipt of your completed application, we will contact you to set up an interview. If you have questions, please contact Ector Simpson at ectors@mizell.org.

Julie, Phyllis and Dale
Three Hearts, One Mission
Some friendships begin in school, at work, or in the neighborhood. For Julie, Phyllis, and Dale, a lasting friendship began at Mizell Center.
What started as a shared commitment to helping others quickly grew into a close bond. Through volunteer shifts, conversations, and countless acts of service, these three women became the best of friends. Today, they are a familiar presence at Mizell, united by the belief that serving others brings purpose, connection, and joy.
Their favorite volunteer assignment is at Aunt Betty’s, where they enjoy assisting community members while sharing encouragement and smiles. They also help in the dining room, where they can connect with members and fellow volunteers.
Julie, originally from Illinois, worked as a Supply Specialist for the federal government before moving to the desert 33 years ago. A Mizell volunteer for the past two years, she is known for her reliability and warmth. One of her favorite programs is the A Cabbello, whose performances are a highlight of her time at the center.
Phyllis moved to the desert in August 2025 after careers with the Federal Reserve, Hartford Insurance, and as a teacher’s aide while raising two sons. Introduced to Mizell by her daughter-in-law, she began volunteering by helping distribute meals during the pandemic. She says volunteering lets her do two things she loves most: helping others and making friends.
Originally from Chicago, Dale spent more than 30 years with Hallmark before settling permanently in the desert five years ago. Her friend Suzy says everyone benefits from those years at Hallmark because Dale is always thoughtful, caring, and has something sweet to say. It’s a description that perfectly captures the kindness she brings to Mizell every day. She especially enjoys the concerts and shows offered at the center.
Dale’s significant other, Larry, is also active at Mizell, volunteering when he can and participating in programs and congregate lunches. His involvement reflects a familiar Mizell story: people who come to help once often become part of the community.
Together, Julie, Phyllis, and Dale represent the very best of volunteering. Though their backgrounds differ, they share a generous spirit and passion for helping others. Along the way, they discovered that service not only enriches the lives of those they support—it also creates lasting friendships.
For their dedication, compassion, and commitment to the Mizell community, we are proud to recognize Julie, Phyllis, and Dale as our Volunteers of the Month for August 2026. Their story is a reminder that when people come together to serve, strong friendships and stronger communities naturally follow.
Aunt Betty’s Thrift Shop
Aunt Betty’s is Mizell Center’s in-house thrift store. Aunt Betty’s volunteers greet customers, answer questions about merchandise and serve as cashiers. Volunteer shifts are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., or 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Lunch Service @ Mizell
Our lunch program serves a delicious lunch Monday through Friday from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. We are seeking volunteers to support the program from 10:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.
Corporate Volunteers
Mizell Center offers corporations, businesses, and community groups a variety of volunteer team-building experiences, including meal service, community outreach, and special projects.
Front Desk Receptionists
Our front desk “Information & Referral” volunteers answer and direct calls, assist visitors and provide a warm and welcoming experience for everyone at Mizell Center. An ongoing weekly commitment, as well as basic computer knowledge, is required. Volunteer shifts are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., or 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Fluency in Spanish is a plus.
