Abstract Art and the Freedom of Creativity: An Interactive Presentation on Abstraction and Art Making May 13, 2024 at 1 PM

Dr. Carlos Silveira will present an interactive presentation/activity on abstract or non-objective art. This presentation will include the theory abstraction and the aesthetic responses to non-objective art. The program will conclude with an interactive mural activity “The Circle Painting”

This presentation will be an introduction to a series of six experimental studio art classes involving the production of several abstract works.

Dr. Carlos Silveira is a professor emeritus in Art Education at California State University Long Beach. His area of specialty is social justice community service learning. In 2001, he was awarded a J. Paul Getty Scholarship for Community Service Learning in Art. In 2003 he implement a visual arts program entitled “The Rio Favela Art Project” which provides positive life alternatives to disenfranchised youth in the slums of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In 2004, he was awarded the California State University, Long Beach Community Service Award. He has developed an international community service learning model “Art and Social Action in Cambodia”, which has been implemented at Pannasastra University of Cambodia (PUC). This program allows American and Cambodian students to work in collaboration and develop social justice community art projects, which are conducted among several disenfranchised sectors of the Cambodian population. Dr. Silveira has given presentations on art and social justice at Princeton University as well as national and international conferences.
